Along with our founding attorney, Joseph A. Romano, Esq., we join in the fight to end breast cancer by introducing our Special October Guest Blogger for the Breast Cancer Awareness Month Blog Series, Linda Camacho.
I clearly remember that day in April 2007. The day my life, as I knew it, changed forever.
It started out like any other day early morning alarm clock, run for the shower and head to work. Everything was going fine, until the shower when I felt the lump,I knew this was bad. Coming from a family with a history of breast cancer, I just knew it was bad. I called my doctor for a referral for a mammogram. Then the whirlwind of craziness started - mammogram, followed by ultrasound, then biopsy. Confirmation of breast cancer followed by tears, fear, and finally anger and a promise to myself that I would beat this. I had surgery in June 2007 and began an aggressive course of chemotherapy and radiation.
That one phone call confirming I had breast cancer became the single most important phone call in my life. I knew, with full certainty that I was not going to lay down and die. I am not that person. I am a strong woman and a fighter (ask my husband, Harold). I would do what I had to do to survive. I am a Survivor. With determination and the support of my husband, kids, family and friends, I got through it all.
I became involved with the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk while I was undergoing chemotherapy. My Aunt Carol, who for years worked for the American Cancer Society and today is a Volunteer, asked me if I wanted to participate in a walk against breast cancer. I read the information she sent and decided to try to raise money to fight this terrible disease. In 2007, with support from my co-workers, friends and family, I helped raise $37,000. In 2008, I helped raise over $22,000. I am proud of the fact that I was in the top 20 fund-raisers in the country.
I urge everyone to be pro-active - go for your annual mammogram and pap-smear - and most importantly, do your own breast examinations.
Don’t become a statistic.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my story with you. There is still time for you to join in to end breast cancer! Join us this Sunday, October 21st at 8am for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Orchard Beach in the Bronx!
