Ahh…October. Autumn in New York, a season to behold phenomenal displays of nature’s beauty known as Fall Foliage. In-between the red and golden leaves on the trees, one may also see a color not usually associated with Fall. Pink!
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Pink has officially been added to the range of Fall Colors. Pink Ribbons are everywhere again!
Pink Ribbons were born because of a hybrid pairing of several different foundations, including the original version, created by Charlotte Haley which was Peach, not pink.
Haley, credited as the first advocate for breast cancer prevention, started the call to action in 1991 that sparked into the movement we know today.
Early promotional events included an annual marathon race during the month of October. Race for a Cure was sponsored by the Susan B. Komen Foundation.
Pink ribbons were added later, after the corporation of Lauder took up the cause of breast cancer in a big way. The dynasty built by cosmetics Icon Estee Lauder embarked upon the largest charity/ sales campaign ever to be held in a Department Store.
Evelyn Lauder, an Estée Lauder senior corporate vice president and a survivor of breast cancer herself, promised to put a pink ribbon on Lauder company affiliated cosmetics counters across the country to spread awareness.
Lauder’s efforts were unprecedented in 1993. Today it is commonplace for major corporations to participate in fund raising events to fight breast cancer.
Our Founding Attorney, Joseph A. Romano, Esq., inspired by his own family member’s battle with breast cancer has called upon his staff to offer support to friend and colleague, Linda Camacho, Executive Assistant of Building and Construction Trades.
Linda, a survivor of breast cancer, is instrumental in raising awareness and funds for a cure to end breast cancer. Her efforts have resulted in organized teams who walk in solidarity with her at The American Cancer Society Annual Walk for a Cure at Orchard Beach, on Sunday October 21st
