blogPhoto1Samuel Gompers was the first and longest-serving president of the American Federation of Labor. During his tenure from 1894 to his death in 1924, he opposed the politicization of Labor causes.

As the innovator of collective bargaining, (a mode of negotiation still used by labor officials today to prevent strikes) President Gompers encouraged his fellow Labor Leaders to unite and lobby Washington in solidarity, thus reducing the need to endorse any one candidate or political party.

A leader by example, in 1913, Gompers stood up to President Taft who was opposed to creating The Department of Labor.
