Joseph A. Romano started the Law Offices of Joseph Romano in 1986 with the help of his father to open his first office. The lawyers at his firm are dedicated to serving New York workers. Mr. Romano prides himself on open and honest representation, friendly service, and responsiveness to clients. He practices in areas including Workers' Compensation, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Personal Injury, Municipal Disability Pensions, Immigration, and Bankruptcy. In practice for more than 25 years, he has represented clients in criminal, family, and injury law matters, successfully tried numerous cases to verdict, appealing cases as needed. His experience in all of these areas gives him a well-rounded approach to any legal matter, which allows him to handle your case skillfully and efficiently from start to finish.
Mr. Romano was born and raised in Yonkers to a family of lawyers, and has close ties to the Bronx and Southern Westchester communities. Growing up, he delivered cookies, put Sunday papers together for the local deli, washed dishes for Wimpy's, worked as an East Bay Lodge short order cook and bus boy, served as a CBS stagehand, and worked for Congressman Peter Peyser. These experiences allowed him to understand the nature of many different industries, and helped shape him into a forceful and compassionate advocate for workers' compensation matters.
During college Mr. Romano lettered for three years in Division 3 Cross Country. He graduated cum laude from Hobart with a Bachelor of Arts in American History in 1982. Following college, he attended Albany Law School Union University, where he volunteered for the tax star program. He earned his law degree in 1985.
Mr. Romano understands all the options available to you as an injured worker. People who have been hurt on the job potentially have recourse to the workers' compensation system, SSDI, municipal disability pensions, and sometimes a personal injury lawsuit brought through the judicial system to obtain compensation. Our firm often works with municipal unions and the building trades. Unlike many other workers' compensation attorneys, Mr. Romano and the firm are very familiar with union contracts and benefits, and how they can be affected by workers' compensation claims. Our knowledge of contracts can save workers a lot in the form of benefits and future work prospects.
The workers' compensation system provides cash benefits and medical care to employees who are hurt or made sick on the job. The system insures that employees injured on the job are compensated without having to litigate their claims, and it is usually the workers' exclusive remedy. However, if a third party, such as an equipment manufacturer, caused or contributed to the injuries suffered at work, a personal injury lawsuit may be appropriate, and would not necessarily be barred by the workers' compensation system.
If you are part of the New York City Retirement System, Mr. Romano can help you with civil service disability pension benefits. These are used to help those that belong to the New York City Retirement System who become disabled and are unable to work. This system is very complex. The type of disability pension for which you may apply depends on your "tier." This is determined by the day that you joined or rejoined the Retirement System. In order to receive these benefits, your accident must arise from a sudden, fortuitous mischance—an injurious event that is out of the ordinary. Any injury that happens without an unexpected event given the particular type of job will not be considered an accidental injury for purposes of recovery. Because the rules are complex, many of these cases must be appealed. Mr. Romano can help you throughout this process.
In addition to his law practice, Mr. Romano is an active contributor to community charitable initiatives, he supports the Teamsters Local 456 in their fundraising efforts for local community organizations including Maria Fareri Children's Hospital in Valhalla and Children's Hospital in Hastings, New York.
Mr. Romano is admitted to practice in the State of New York, and Federal courts in the Southern District of New York and the Eastern District of New York. He is a member of the New York State Trial Lawyers, the Workers' Compensation Bar, and the Westchester County Bar Association. With over 25 years of experience in workers' compensation, Mr. Romano can help you recover compensation for your injuries and take other cases to trial as necessary.
